Scotland's Hutchison Aiming To End Rollercoaster GTWCE Endurance Season With Flourish

Silver Cup podium Finlay Hutchison's target in final round at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya hosts the fifth and final round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS Endurance Cup season this coming weekend, 1st/2nd October – a race in which Finlay Hutchison is determined to make a return to the Silver Cup podium for Team WRT.

Bringing the curtain down on the Scotsman’s first season with the renowned Belgian squad, the upcoming three-hour race in Spain is also set to mark the final GTWCE outing for Team WRT with the Audi marque – a historic event in all actuality, the two entities having been affiliated since 2010.

Hutchison and team-mates Lewis Proctor and Diego Menchaca head into round five in 11th position in the Silver Cup standings, having experienced a frustrating and incident packed season which has hampered their true potential.

“The final round has come around quickly, so soon after Hockenheim, and we’re all looking forward to it”, Dundee racer Hutchison commented, “It’s been a bit of an up and down season, we haven’t had the best of luck at times and that has had an impact on the results. But we know our package is strong and Lewis, Diego and I are working well together, so the podium is the aim this weekend.”

Last time out, at the Hockenheimring in Germany, a strong points finish was on the cards after a competitive opening stint from Hutchison – moving the No.31 Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II up from 12th in class at the beginning to challenge for the top 10.

Holding ninth in hour two, with Proctor at the wheel, unfortunately hopes of a continued push up the order in the final hour were dramatically curtailed when the rear wing broke. Leading to a long delay in the pits, Menchaca then had a thankless task in the final hour and had to settle for 14th.

The competitiveness of the three team-mates was clear to see from the opening event of 2022 at Imola in Italy, where a top six result was only prevented due to an unfortunate time penalty. In round two, the visit to Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France, Hutchison predicted a podium and that is indeed what the trio delivered.

Taking a third place finish in the Silver Cup, on a weekend where the Scotsman was feeling under the weather due to a lingering bug, the result also elevated the Team WRT drivers into fourth position in the championship.

Gearbox failure, and a wheel bearing problem late on, halted hopes of another podium in the biggest race of the campaign – the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa – but Hutchison did at least achieve his first ever race finish in the twice-round-the-clock encounter, round three of the season.

Now, all focus is on concluding a rollercoaster year in the globe’s biggest GT3 endurance racing category with some more well-deserved silverware. As ever in GTWCE nothing is easy, but the Team WRT trio are carrying confidence into the season finale.

“By its nature endurance racing is always unpredictable, there is so much you need to go your way no matter how competitive”, said Hutchison, “If we can have a clear run in qualifying, maintain good reliability and the car is performing well, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to fight for a return to the podium. Hopefully we can end the season on a bit of a high.”

Following testing in Barcelona on Friday, 30th September, free practice will follow on Saturday, 1st October, at 08.00 UK time with pre-qualifying at 12.40 UK time. Final qualifying will get underway at 08.00 UK time on Sunday, 2nd October, with the three-hour race commencing at 14.00 UK time.
